John Perival Fortescue M 1 Kewantin NWT Born Oct Joseph died on 15 June 1899 in Kingston, Ontario, Canada.¹⁰ Factory was owned by Hudson Bay Comp. and was involed in fur trading. It is about 525 miles north east of Winnipeg on Hudson Bay. There are no roads going in, one has to fly in.

York's population grew with each passing year, soon outstripping the resources needed to sustain it. A sprawling complex spanning eleven acres, its immense size made it very difficult to fuel: the demand for firewood far exceeded the supply. By 1880 it took a labour force of some forty to sixty men and women to transport firewood from cutting sites to wood yards. Food shortages were also becoming an issue. Declining goose, caribou and rabbit populations affected food supplies. The imbalance in the local ecosystem became glaringly obvious. In 1873 York Factory's role as the headquarters and supply depot for the Northern Department officially ended. Chief Factor Joseph Fortescue, who was in charge of York Factory from 1872 to 1884, terminated the York Factory brigades and operations were reduced.

Played Rose Maylie in Yates's Oliver Twist at the Aldephi in Nov 38, now appearing as Barnaby at the English Opera House; later played Mary Graham in Martin Chuzzlewit, Meg Veck in The Chimes, Dot in The Cricket on the Hearth; also acted in CD's amateur company in 1845 and 1848. Macready, who saw her play Barnaby on 7 July, "with great vivacity and grace and power" ( Macready's Reminiscencies, ed. Sir F Pollock,II,180), thought she showed excellent promise , but was disappointed when she acted with him in The Two gentlemen of Verona, Dury Lane, Dec 41.In 1842 she gave birth to a son by Alan Legge Gardner, 3rd Barn Gardner (1810-1883); other sons by him followed in 1843 and 1846 but she continued to act. After his wife's death 1847, she was generally supposed to have married Gardner (Burkes peerage dates the marriage 1848). In Fact she had two more children by him first, daughters born 1853 and 1856 and the marriage took place in 1856 (CD sent Macready news of it on 13 Dec 56). "yes Fortescue is Trandescent" Maclise replied in his letter of 16 July, "- you have heard what Mac the first says-'she is really and truly charming'.-is her nose turned up-? Allow me - I think you are not clear as to that point - but if so - you are altogether absorbed in the wild attractions of her legs, and her general suave movements - her voice is regulated to the most perfect scale of modulation. You must expect to see as to the personation - an Operatic Barnaby of course in a degree - the small waist, the neatly turned leg - and the woman bust - the tunic exactly reaching where we wish it, the straws, and Peacock Feather placed Plume like and the half bend toe - close knee - wrist bend movement, but still you will like her - love her -doat upon her."
