In 1600 (This makes a lot of his children illegitimate) he married Grace, daughter of Sir John Manners of Haddon, Derbyshire, who was the second son of Thomas, Earl of Rutland. Francis was M.P. for Buckingham town in 1592 and 1597, and in 1600 he succeeded his father as a knight of the shire for the county of Buckinghamshire. He retired to Devon with the rank of Brigadier General in 1918. He gave collection of Zulu items, mostly beadwork, to the Royal Albert Memorial Museum in 1935; although we do not know when he collected them, it is most likely to have been between 1908-10
