Francis was M.P. for Buckingham town in 1592 and 1597, and in 1600 he succeeded his father as a knight of the shire for the county of Buckinghamshire. James I conferred the Order of the Bath on him at his coronation - on 24th July 1603. Sir Francis inherited the "Fostership" of Cornebury Park and Whichwood Forest from his father. He retired to Devon with the rank of Brigadier General in 1918. He gave collection of Zulu items, mostly beadwork, to the Royal Albert Memorial Museum in 1935; although we do not know when he collected them, it is most likely to have been between 1908-10
