This is in reply to your enquiry about a painting by William Banks Fortescue (c1855 - 1924) who was painting in Newlyn and the surrounding area from about 1885.

In November of that year he was lodging with a Mrs Maddern at Bellevue Terrace here in Newlyn, at that time Stanhope Forbes was also living there. You do not say how much you know about the artist, he was an engineering designer in Birmingham before deciding to become an artist and then studied in Paris and later (possibly in 1883 or 1884) in Venice before coming to Newlyn, in the mid 1890s he moved to St. Ives where he remained for the rest of his life. In 1979 there was an exhibition of paintings by Newlyn School artists at the gallery here in Newlyn and I think that the painting by Fortescue which is reproduced in the exhibition catalogue may be the one you are looking for. It shows an elderly woman, in traditional fishwives costume and with a basket of fish on her back, walking along the shore with a small boy, there are rwo other women in the background and in the distance some fishing boats. Fishwives were favourite subjects for the Newlyn artists and he may have painted them more than once. In this picture (probably inspired by Stanhope Forbes famous painting 'Fish Sale') the small boy is carrying a model boat and is wearing a hat, his feet are bare. It was painted in the late 1880s and in the 1979 exhibition the painting was on loan to Newlyn from an Art Gallery in Southport, Merseyside. I have spoken to the gallery and they still have the painting, in fact it is on show at the moment. I am sending you separately the picture scanned in from the 1979 catalogue. This is not a good copy as my scanner does not cope easily with thick books, but it should be good enough for you to see if this is the picture you are looking for...I assume that you already have a copy? Fortescue regularly exhibited in Southport and I think that he may have been born there.

From a report in 2005 "The picture is called the Fish Fag (I don't know where the title comes from?) and the gallery which owns it is the Atkinson Art Gallery, Lord Street, Southport, Merseyside, PR8 1DH and the telephone number is 01704 533133. The gallery is open Monday to Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm except that on Thursdays and Saturdays they close at 1pm. I have spoken to the Penlee Art Gallery here in Penzance and they have two paintings by Fortescue - The Forge and Newlyn Harbour. They are having an exhibition at Penlee in June of paintings by Newlyn School artists and will be borrowing the painting from the Atkinson Gallery for that exhibition"

EAST ALLINGTON

ALLINGTON, (EAST) a pleasant scattered village, four miles N.E. by E. of Kingsbridge, has in its parish 729 souls, and 3500 acres of land, generally having a light fertile soil, and including Combe, Harleston, Yetson, and other scattered farms. W. B. Fortescue, Esq., owns nearly half the parish, and is lord of the manor, and has a handsome seat here, called FALLAPIT HOUSE, where his family has been seated for many generations. The present house is a large and handsome mansion, in the Elizabethan style, erected about 35 years ago, near the old one, an ivy mantled portion of which still remains. The house was enlarged in 1849, and is pleasantly situated in the midst of extensive and tasteful pleasure grounds. Fallapit was anciently the seat of a family of its own name. whose heiress married Sir Henry Fortescue, Lord Chief Justice of the Common Pleas in Ireland. She was his second wife, and their descendants in the male line resided here above 300 years. Sir Edmund Fortescue was created a baronet in 1644, but the title became extinct on the death of his son, in 1683. The estate then passed to a younger branch, which became extinct in 1734, by the death of Edmund Fortescue, Esq., whose daughter married Thomas Bury, Esq., whose heiress carried the estate in marriage to the Rev. Nathl. Wells, whose eldest son took the name of Fortescue, and was grandfather of the present proprietor. Sir. W. W. Knighton, Capt. Turner, Capt. Owen, C. Prideaux, Esq., Miss Prowse, Mr. W. Luscombe, and others have freehold estates in the parish. The Church (St. Andrew,) is a large ancient structure, in the early perpendicular style, with a lofty embattled tower, containing five bells. The nave has octagonal columns on the north, and clustered columns on the south side. The pulpit is beautifully carved, and the church has a clean and neat appearance, being renovated in 1848. The rectory, valued in K.B. at £32. 2s. 1d., and in 1831 at £345, is in the patronage of W. B. Fortescue, Esq., and incumbency of the Rev. H. R. Fortescue, B.A., who has 113A. 1R. 37P. of glebe, and a handsome Rectory House, built in 1847, in the Elizabethan style. The tithes were commuted in 1839 for £485 per annum, The poor parishioners have 20s. a year, left by John Peter, in 1570, out of the tithes of Cornworthy.

William Charles FORTESCUE Viscount Clermont³¹ was born on 12 October 1764. He died in 1795. He was buried in 1795 in Clermont Park, Norfolk. William Charles, the 2nd Viscount Clermont, became a Lieutenant Colonel. He inherited Ravensdale Park properties from his brother Thomas in 1795. In March 1790 he succeeded his brother in representing Co. Louth. He continued to sit for Louth until the dissolution of the Irish Parliament in 1800. Then he represented Louth at the UK Parliament, until the death of his uncle Earl Clermont in 1806 caused him to relinquish his seat. His Viscountcy and Barony of 1776 descended to William Charles, including Louth and Norfolk estates.

He never married, and died at Ravensdale Park on 24th June 1829. The titles expired when he died, since his three brothers pre-deceased him. In his Will he left his estates in the first place to his only nephew, Sir Harry James Goodricke of Ribston Hall in Yorkshire, with the remainder to the heirs male of the late Col. Chichester Fortescue of Dromisken, the representative of the elder line of Sir Faithful. Sir Harry Goodricke died on 21st August 1833, unmarried.

The Louth and Armagh estates passed to Thomas Fortescue of Dromisken, who inherited his father's estates of Dromisken and Glyde Farm, and on 11th February 1852 he obtained a revival of the Barony of Clermont. Capt William Faithful FORTESCUE of Malahide⁹³ was born about 1780.¹⁹ He died on 22 June 1821 in Mallow, County Cork, Ireland. Gravestone reads "This humble tribute of filial affection is erected to the memory of William Faithful Esq of the 27 Regiment of Foot who died at Mallow where he had for the recovery of his health on the 22nd of June 1821 in the 41 year of his age. He received a shot through the lungs in the Battle of Waterloo the 18th of June 1815 which in in his painful and lingering existence of which finally caused his death" Officer in Army died of his wounds from the Battle of Waterloo. Earl William Henry FORTESCUE of Clermont³¹ was born on 6 August 1722. He died on 29 September 1806 in Steyne, Brighton, Sussex. He was buried on 10 October 1806 in Little Cressingham, near Watton, Norfolk. William Henry, born on 6th August 1722, was returned as a knight of the shire for Co. Louth in October 1747. On 29th February 1752 he married Frances, eldest daughter of General Murray of Co. Monaghan. Her estates in Co. Monaghan passed to the Westenras, the Lords Rossmore.

In 1761 William was elected for both Co. Louth and for the town of Monaghan, and he chose to sit for the latter. His brother sat for Co. Louth.

In 1764 he was made Paymaster General for Ireland and a Privy Councillor.

In 1768 he was made Custos Rotulorum for Co. Louth, was Governor of Co. Monaghan, and was again returned as M.P. for Monaghan, which he represented until he was elevated to the peerage on 26th May 1770, as Baron Clermont.

In 1776, having no son, he obtained a patent creating himself as Viscount and Baron Clermont, with a special remainder to his brother the Rt. Hon. James Fortescue of Ravensdale Park, and his male issue. On 24th January 1777 he was raised to become the Earl of Clermont.

William died at Brighton on 29th September 1806, aged 84, and was buried on 10th October at Little Cressingham, near Watton, Norfolk, the parish in which his seat of Clermont Lodge stood. There is a tablet in the church there. Clermont is a fictitious place in Ireland it seems.

Frances, Lady Clermont, survived her husband by a few years.

In 1783 he was appointed an original Knight of St Patrick on the institution of that order.
