1609. 5 th Earl Fortescue Hugh William FORTESCUE MC201 was born on 14 June 1888.202 He died on 14 June 1958 in Castle Hill, Filleigh, Devon.202 Died on his 70th Birthday four days after the death of his wife. The elder son of the 4th Earl and Emily daughter of the second Lord Harlech. Eton from 1901 to 1905 then went to Sandhurst joining the Scots Greys in 1907. In 1914 he went to France was wounded twice and awarded M.C. After the war he went to India for sometime becoming A.D.C. to the Commander-in-Chief in India. He retired in 1922 and went to live at the Ebrington. Viscount Ebrington as he was known, until his father died in 1932, and his wife were both devoted to Fox Hunting. In 1936 appointed Lord Lieutenant of Devon. He was Lord-in-waiting from 1937 to 1945. Appointed Knight of the Garter in 1951. At the coronation of the Queen he was one of the four K.G.'s holding the anointing canopy. He married Margaret Helen eldest daughter of the first Viscount Allendale and Alexandrina daughter of the fifth Marquess of Londonderry.
